My Electronics are Green

Green Peace Guide to Greener Electronics

I was checking Greenpeace’s “Guide to greener electronics” and apparently the stuff I own are made by a bunch of green companies. My cell phone is a Sony Ericsson with 7.7/10, my laptop is a Toshiba with a 7/10 and the DVD player and surround system in my room are from LG with a 7/10 too. The other electronics in the house are mostly from green companies too so I am glad I have little negative on the environment!

We Invented it First!

Cellular phones

A week ago while I was reading Reuters news on my cell, I read an article about people in Africa using a new method to contact each others. This new method is THE MISSED CALL! They just discovered it and cell phones companies are going crazy about it since they can’t make money from it. But the only thing missing in the article is a mention that Lebanese have been using this method for years now and that we use it for everything: Yes, No, I Love you, Good Morning, Good night, Call me, Hi, Bye, I hate you, come down (Nzal), I arrived, I’ll be arriving soon, I reached the party, I left the party, I miss you … And I can keep counting the usage of this beep for many more lines.

Anyways I googled for the article and here’s a quote from it followed by the link to the original web-site.

Khartoum – If you are in Sudan it is a ‘missed call’. In Ethiopia it is a ‘miskin’ or a ‘pitiful’ call. In other parts of Africa it is a case of ‘flashing’, ‘beeping’ or in French-speaking areas ‘bipage’.

Wherever you are, it is one of the fastest-growing phenomena in the continent’s booming cellphone markets – and it’s a headache for cellphone operators who are trying to figure out how to make some money out of it.

Fixing the K750i Joystick

Taking a K750 apart

I own a K750i, it is a very good phone with a lot of nice features but the only problem with it is its joystick.

The joystick on my phone stopped working correctly 2 weeks ago, I can press it down or press it to the left and I can also select with it but it wont press upwards or to the right side so today I googled for a fix to this problem and found one.

You will need:

  • An Electronic contact cleaner.
  • A tiny T-7 torx screwdriver

First of all take your phone apart, then take the joystick and start spraying it with the contact cleaner. (don’t worry apparently it doesn’t mess it up) Wait for a while for the joystick to dry and put everything back together.

Your phone joystick should be responsive again. if it’s not just get it repaired somewhere :P .

I am going to try this on Thursday since I have a day off, I just need to find an Electronic contact cleaner before, any idea who might sell them in Lebanon?

For more info check the original tutorial here.

Be careful when messing around with the insides of your phone, you could easily damage it. If you do you can only blame yourself, don’t do it if you can’t do it!

Thanks for the people in the forums mentioned above who tried the procedure and posted the pictures.

Here’s were you should spray the contact cleaner

Ipod Touch vs SE W960

Ipod TouchSony Ericsson W960Before Steeve Jobs announced the launch of the Ipod Touch I was going to get the SE W960, now I am lost!

The Ipod Touch is an Ipod with more features, The SE W960 is a phone with more features.
BUT apparently the SE is going to have a very high price while the Ipod is at 300$ so I could get the Ipod for music and WiFi and keep my phone for calling and taking some photos.

I contacted Interlink (Apple dealers) and they told me the Ipod touch will be here in 4 weeks, The SE dealers told me the W960 will be here at the end of October so I still have time to decide but I think that what will affect my final decision is the price of the SE, if it’s under 600$ I might get it, if not I will be getting the Ipod and maybe a new cell because this one is getting old (but its still good so I might just keep it)

Sony Ericsson W960

I currently own a Sony Ericsson K750i, the phone is great, when I bought it it contained everything I needed. The K750 is now 2 years old and I want to change it, my minimum requirements are:

  • Wi-Fi
  • 3.2 MP Camera
  • 2GB of memory
  • Other features are now standards (Bluetooth, MP3…)

I found everything I needed in the SE W960 that is coming out later this year, it has Wi-Fi, a 3.2 MP Camera, 8GB of Memory, a touch screen and many more great features, the package also comes with a bluetooth headset and a normal one.

Here’s the full phone specifications from the GMS Arena.
